Home décor: 0$ challenge part II – cabinet in the entryway

Remember that guy?

Zero dollar challenge 02-1

Special thanks to the electrician who installed the light switch in the middle of the wall.

I’ve been looking for a black cabinet with some mirror for a while now, so I was pretty excited when I layed my eyes on this one at HomeSense during the Holidays while shopping with my mom. And I got it for 1 cent. Yes, 1 cent!

Well, actually I had some HomeSense gift cards that JF and I received at our housewarming party (thanks to great friends) that totalized 130$ and the cabinet was 129.99$. So there you have it, 1 little penny! Alright, it wasn’t a tax free day, but that doesn’t count. Anyway, it was a great deal! And since that day, the cabinet was standing in the entryway all by hitself looking lost. It needed love, and fast.

To bring a bit of warmth around that corner, and since it’s one of the first things we see when we enter the house, I decided to showcase some souvenirs from our last summer vacation in French Riviera.

On the left side, there’s a colorful vase ready to hold some beautiful spring flowers and on the right side, there are two plates hanging on the wall (I used 3M double-sided mounting squares for that magic trick). Those three items are from Maison du Monde, a home store I discovered on a shopping afternoon at NicÉtoile in Nice. I loooved this store and I’m looking forward to go back one day. This may happen in a near future, but that’s another story!

In the grey rectangular tray that was previously on the coffee table, stands a cookie box (we got it at La Cure Gourmande the first time we were in Menton) on top of a stack of architecture books. There’s also a white vase that has been with us forever and a shiny little piggy.

The cabinet holds a few board games and some party supplies. Since it’s located near the living and dining rooms, it’s very handy in addition to being beautiful! It adds a little exotic feeling while complementing the style of our open living space.

It may be a little tricky at the beginning because we all get tired of what we own and want to get rid of it, but just by changing your favorite objects from a room to another you can make a big impact. And don’t forget to search in your travel or family souvenirs, they are the best additions to personalize your space!
